From a web developer's perspective we would consider the following points

  • Do you have an existing website?
    • Is the base software up to date (e.g. Joomla, Wordpress, Grav etc.)
    • Does the site layout look tired and dated?
    • How effective is it on a modern smartphone or tablet?
  • No current website so a new design and build required
    • Purpose of the website (Brochure, Information, Ecommerce, Blog etc.)
    • Who is the audience?
    • Who are competitors?
    • What is your USP (Unique Selling Point)?

Website Purpose

Most websites exist to provide information about goods or services that you offer and this has a direct impact on the frequency of how often you need to update your website content.

Consider a website with ecommerce capability. This would need to be updated frequently in terms of content, especially stock control (unless your system is automated). For a relatively static site offering services then the update of content should be monthly or quarterly while sites offering information services should be updated perhaps daily or weekly subject to user expectations.

Personal Websites

We are getting more requests for personal websites since the dramatic effects of Covid-19 on employment. More people are looking to have a personal space online where they can retain their online CV for job applications.

This sort of information changes infrequently so we suggest that if you have a CV presence on the web then keep it simple by using an HTML template or flat file system such as Grav. Using a Content Management System such as Joomla or Wordpress would be overkill.

While this shows a great approach to keeping your CV in one place making it easier to update and access you need to remember that the data will be in the public domain. So whatever you put on your personal website could be used for criminal intent, such as identity theft, so caution is the keyword.

Software Updates

This is an area most people ignore once their website has been built. If you are using a CMS such as Joomla or Wordpress then you must be prepared to update the base software as new releases are issued. This helps to keep your website secure from hackers and spammers. For more advanced websites this may mean that some of the extensions providing functionality also need to be updated as well.
